Latino activist groups and the American Civil Liberties Union on Monday appeared in a federal courtroom in Phoenix to argue for an injunction against one of the remaining statutes of Arizona's immigration law, Senate Bill 1070.

The judge has taken the matter under advisement.

In a case named for the Phoenix-based social-service agency Friendly House, which assists immigrants, Victor Viramontes, national counsel for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, asked U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton to issue a temporary restraining order on a portion of the state immigration law that makes it illegal to impede traffic while stopping to pick up day laborers.

Arizona Governor Wastes More Time and Taxpayer Dollars Appealing SB1070

brewerPhoenix, AZ – On Monday, May 9th, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer and Attorney General Tom Horne announced their plan to ask the United States Supreme Court to lift the current injunction that prevents parts of SB1070 from going into effect.  The following is a statement from Border Action Network Executive Director Jennifer Allen regarding that announcement:

For more than a year, Arizona’s taxpayers have had to spend millions of dollars in legal costs defending SB1070, Arizona’s ill-conceived “show-me-your-papers” law. This law has greatly damaged our state’s international reputation and relations and wreaked havoc on our state’s already-faltering economy. Last month, the Ninth Circuit upheld Judge Bolton’s decision to enjoin key provisions of the law, and instead of honoring that decision, our elected officials are wasting further time and resources by taking this to the U.S. Supreme Court.

While other state legislatures across the country are voting down bills like SB1070, our Governor and Attorney General continue to push this costly, losing battle forward. Today’s announcement reiterates that Governor Brewer and Attorney General Horne place little to no importance on addressing the state’s economic, jobs, health and education crisis.  Instead, they insist on fomenting division and fear and on further wasting precious taxpayer dollars.
